Special Guardianship for a grandparent

Children – Public Law

28 November 2023

Corey acted for a paternal grandfather in care proceedings brought against parents who had substance misuse and parenting issues. Corey met the grandfather at the first hearing, and stayed with the case all the way through to final hearing. He explained and supported the client through the process of becoming a party to the case, putting himself forward for assessment and eventually becoming a special guardian for his granddaughter.

Corey’s advice enabled his client to understand the various options available to the court and to add to those options by offering the child a home. This ensured the child was placed within the paternal family under a Special Guardianship Order. The Local Authority resisted paying financial support to the grandfather at the correct level for the child, and Corey persuaded the Court to ensure the this was provided.
