Allen joined Becket Chambers in February 2021, and has a broad practice across the full spectrum of Chambers’ expertise. He is happy to be instructed for representation and paperwork in all areas of family law and general civil law.

He represents families at all stages in public and private children cases and proceedings for financial remedies, as well as applications under the Family Law Act 1996 for occupation and non-molestation orders.

Allen also advises and represents clients across all of Chambers’ core civil law areas, appearing in court in small claim and fast track matters, stage 3 claims and disposal hearings, and interim applications for Claimants and Defendants.

Allen is known for being easy to talk to and sensitive to the needs of his clients, whether helping them to navigate through stressful experiences or dealing with specific vulnerabilities such as mental health issues, alcohol or drug abuse or educational challenges.

His experience includes working with clients whose first language is not English and where the services of an interpreter or translator are required, and he is sensitive to the differing needs of clients from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

Before becoming a barrister, Allen was a strategic consultant specialising in branding projects with government, corporate, and third sector clients.

This professional background means that, as well as his strong advocacy skills, he is very focussed on client care, and has a high level of commercial awareness.

Alongside his court work, Allen has a busy and varied paperwork practice, drafting pleadings and advices across a wide range of civil law and family law matters.

Allen acts for clients at all stages from early instruction to fact-finding hearings to completion of matters at a final hearing.

He acts for parents in matters including issues of jurisdiction, residence, and in matters concerning internal or external relocation. He also acts in sensitive cases where there are allegations of domestic violence, and physical, psychological or sexual abuse.

He is experienced at representing clients who are particularly vulnerable, due to mental health issues, alcohol or drug abuse or educational challenges. He is also experienced in working with clients whose first language is not English and/or who need the help of an interpreter or translator.

Allen prides himself on his balanced and empathetic approach to these issues. Whilst supporting his clients to achieve their desired outcomes he also encourages them to take a pragmatic view of a situation, with the best interests of the child(ren) at heart.

His clients tell him that they find him reassuring and easy to talk to, and his naturally calm and reassuring personality helps them to take a balanced view of their situation. Where possible, and where it is in the child’s best interest, he encourages them to resolve matters before needing to go to court, and to bear in mind that the decisions they make may have an impact for some time to come, so they need to arrive at an outcome which everyone involved can live with.

Where matters can’t be resolved and court representation is needed, Allen is a strong, natural advocate.
Allen welcomes instruction across any aspect of public children law.

He has acted for Local Authorities as well as for parents, so understands the process and priorities from both sides of a case, as well as having practical experience of how local authorities proceed.

Allen is experienced with acting for vulnerable parents in matters including cases involving alcohol and drug misuse, chronic neglect, complex medical issues and allegations of sexual abuse, and treats them and their situation with sensitivity and compassion. He is also experienced in working with clients whose first language is not English and/or who need the help of an interpreter or translator.
Allen is regularly instructed to deal with financial provision cases following divorce.

He has experience of cases involving pensions, companies, disputes over inherited or pre-acquired wealth, and cases involving assets acquired from third parties.

Allen has an analytical mind, and has experience in cases where there are large and complex assets as well as those limited to need, where he focusses on finding a workable solution for both parties.

His approach is patient and collaborative, and he encourages his clients to settle where appropriate, and avoid further hearings and additional court expenses where possible.

Allen is sensitive to the challenging emotions which these cases often involve. His clients describe him as easy to talk to, and he uses his naturally calm and reassuring manner to help them to see past the difficult emotional aspects of their situation and to reach agreement whenever possible.
Allen is particularly interested in residential property matters and welcomes instructions from both private landlords and local authorities for possession of residential properties.

He provides advice and representation on matters involving disrepair, anti-social behaviour and neighbour disputes – including disputes over boundaries – and will deal with applications for civil injunctions where necessary; for example, in cases of harassment.

He is acutely aware of how neighbour disputes can escalate, and the strong emotions which often accompany them. Whilst offering strong advocacy where a case demands it, he encourages his clients to take a step back and try to resolve matters before they reach court – reminding them that they will need to be able to live with the outcome (and in the vicinity of their neighbours).

Allen would encourage clients to seek advice as early as possible in a dispute, before matters escalate. He offers an initial short conference in which he will provide a realistic view of the merits of a case at any stage and offer an honest viewpoint as to the likelihood of success.

He can provide advice at any stage and acts at all stages of proceedings.
Allen represents clients in a variety of personal injury matters, advising on liability, evidence and quantum for claimants and defendants. He combines a calm, reassuring manner in court and close attention to detail to instil confidence in his clients.

He has appeared for clients in contested road traffic accident claims, occupier and employer liability claims, as well as acting in matters involving issues of fundamental dishonesty.

He will provide court representation and paperwork, and is adept at reviewing expert reports and drafting skeleton arguments and pleadings.
Allen is regularly instructed on a range of contractual and commercial matters including interpretation, breach or termination of contracts and claims for damages.

He is keen to help clients to avoid lengthy and expensive litigation where possible, and recommends that anyone concerned about a commercial law issue speaks to a barrister as early as possible.

Having this conversation, understanding the legal aspects of the situation and the likely outcome of any litigation can often help to achieve early settlement of issues and minimise stress and expense.

Allen welcomes enquiries and is happy to advise on the merits of litigation at an early stage of any dispute.

Solicitors Instructing Allen Worwood in Care Proceedings

I am very pleased with the service from chambers and Allen on this case. It is a particularly challenging case and Allen has been excellent throughout, both in preparing for hearings and his grasp of the case and always available to discuss matters outside of court. The client is also extremely positive about Allen as well.
